Animal scientists conduct research in the genetics, nutrition, reproduction, and development of domestic farm animals in order to formulate more efficient ways of producing and processing meat, poultry, eggs, and milk.
Animal scientists consult with agricultural producers on how to provide healthy and safe housing for their animals; lower mortality rates and improve parasite and disease control; dispose of waste matter; and increase the production of animal products.
Some animal scientists are involved in the selection and breeding of animals to create new strains of animals with desirable characteristics. Others investigate and analyze different management practices, processing methods, feeding techniques, and environmental conditions to determine their effect on the quality and quantity of animal products.
