Animal Production Managers concentrate on the quality and production of animal products.
They are responsible for day-to-day and on-going co-ordination of production policies and work plans for the management of animal production which includes tasks such as pasture management, animal production schemes, animal breeding, animal science and genetics, treating common diseases as well as managing personnel and budgets.
There are various fields that they can work in such as livestock, poultry, egg and dairy units as well as horse farms, zoos and pet animal breeders.
Other opportunities exist in agribusiness, technical service, teaching, veterinary science and laboratory animal care.
They are responsible for the formulation of nutrition and health programmes to ensure the efficient production of healthy animals.
The production manager needs to have an extensive knowledge of animal science and genetics, aquaculture, animal husbandry, veld management, animal nutrition and animal health. They are mostly self-employed or work for large-scale farmers or breeders.
