Animal Health Technicians are responsible for administering disinfectant to control and destroy infectious and contagious animal diseases. As well as assisting veterinarians in their practices by physically examining animals and determining their illnesses or injuries, administering medication, immunisation or anaesthesia and taking blood samples.
They also take temperatures and pulses and record the readings, assist with dressing and cleaning wounds, fitting splints, cleaning and removing teeth, giving enemas, inserting catheters, giving intravenous feedings and exposing and developing x-rays.
They assist veterinarians in surgery by handling and providing the correct operating instruments and monitoring for animal’s vital signs during surgery. They are responsible for ensuring all operating equipment is kept in good working order.
They are involved in post-surgery procedures such as monitoring the animal’s recovery and progress. They also assist scientists, senior technologists and biological workers in laboratory work. They handle the animals in experimental and research work and observe their behaviour or reactions during treatment. They also assist in euthanasing unwanted or abandoned cats and dogs at animal shelters.
