An agricultural economist analyses economic and social phenomena in the world, and their impact on agriculture. Research is an important part of the career. An agricultural economist should have mathematical skills, be intuitive and have excellent communication skills.
Some career opportunities include:
- Agribusiness Management
- Financial services
Typical work activities include:
- monitoring economic changes in agriculture;
- devising methods and procedures for obtaining required data;
- understanding various sampling techniques that may be used to conduct different types of surveys;
- creating, as well as using, various mathematical modelling techniques to develop forecasts; a
- pplying models of economic behaviour to agricultural changes and developments;
- advising agricultural organisations on costs and benefits of options;
- advising government, employers or trade unions on the economic implications of agricultural policy options;
- producing various numerical and non-numerical written reports;
- supplying information on agricultural market trends to the press.
What qualifications will I need?
Postgraduate qualification in economics, preferably Agricultural Economics.
