One of the few careers that will fully satisfy your spirit of adventure is that of a seafarer.
Does a life at sea visiting various Countries appeal to you?
A career in Engineering could lead you to a life as an Engineering Officer on board a Ship whether with the Navy or a Commercial Shipping Company.
Although both mentally and physically challenging, a seafarer's career enables early responsibility, internationally recognised qualifications, competitive remuneration packages, excellent prospects for performance-based promotion both at sea and ashore, plus the opportunity to travel the world.
The opportunity to serve a three to four year cadetship is offered by most shipping companies, which includes technical study, qualifying for sea service and ancillary training towards a Marine Certificate of Competency.
Through the cadetship, cadets advance to the higher ranks of their chosen career.
After obtaining the initial diploma in either Engineering or Maritime Studies, a trainee is required to do a minimum of 12 months onboard training during which a Training Record Book is completed. It is important that during this time the ancillary courses specific to the field direction be completed this then enables the student to sit the SAMSA oral examination leading to the first qualification as an Engineering or Deck Officer of the Watch.
Once the Certificate of Competency is obtained, the trainee becomes eligible to serve in the ranks of Junior Engineer (to progress through the ranks to 4th and 3rd Engineer) or on the
navigation side, serve in the ranks of 3rd and 2nd Navigating officer.
At least another 24 months at sea, more technical training and additional ancillary courses are required before an Engineering or Deck Officer will be ready for the final Certificate of competency.
Once the final Certificate of Competency is earned the successful candidate may then serve in the rank of Chief Engineer or Ships Master(Captain).
Training onboard and ashore is a continuous process. It takes at least 10 years of training and experience to be considered for promotion to the rank of Chief Engineer or Captain.
